Throughout the 1990s, Avijit Banerjee built a distinguished career in the television industry, earning the trust of producers and broadcasters for his expertise in television marketing, promotions, and content development. In 1998, he expanded into content production with the establishment of Adjeet, under which he produced commissioned programming for Doordarshan.
Over the course of his career, Avijit has directed and contributed to the production of more than a thousand television episodes across multiple broadcasting platforms. Several of these productions enjoyed notable success, including programs that consistently ranked among the most-watched offerings on their respective channels. His work has been guided by a strong belief in the transformative power of media and its ability to educate, inform, and inspire.
In 2013, driven by a commitment to accessible education, he launched Mission Shiksha, a 24-hour satellite television channel dedicated to educational programming. While the venture faced commercial challenges, its vision anticipated many of the technology-enabled learning models and educational broadcasting initiatives that would gain prominence in the years that followed.
Avijit's creative work has also received international recognition. His documentary The Konark Code was showcased at the prestigious Jawaharlal Nehru Centre in London, introducing his work to audiences beyond India. During his career, he also shared a close professional association with the acclaimed filmmaker Rituparno Ghosh, widely regarded as one of the most influential voices in Indian cinema.
Today, through Sri Ganesh Productions (Kolkata), Avijit continues to develop projects that combine artistic integrity with meaningful storytelling. The production house is dedicated to creating content that informs, engages, and preserves important cultural narratives.
Among its most significant achievements is Ethos of Darkness, a documentary that brings overdue recognition to the many unsung individuals whose contributions have helped shape Indian cinema. Their stories, often overlooked despite their lasting impact, form the foundation of this acclaimed work. In recognition of its contribution to documentary filmmaking, Ethos of Darkness received the 69th National Film Award (2023) for Best Documentary Film in the Science & Technology category, one of India's most prestigious honours in cinema.
